The Dryer
The clouds burst with rain forcing me to take shelter to the side of someone’s house.
It rained surly and incessantly, and I didn’t have an umbrella. As I pressed my body against the wall from the heavy downpour, I wondered what the owners would have thought if they found me. Thankfully, a watch-dog didn’t come lurking from the back. While the house provided some shelter, my white top was soaked and practically transparent.
As I walked down the street, my attempts to shield piercing eyes from zooming in didn’t go unnoticed. I was in a newly developed neighborhood with men doing construction on the road and there weren’t any clothing stores nearby. I had an appointment and needed to look presentable.
It then dawned on me that I could go to a coin laundromat to dry my clothes. As I stepped in, I saw a woman and asked her if I could give her my top to put inside one of the dryers. I gave her some coins ,stepped inside the bathroom, then handed over my white top. Soon after, she returned my crisp top and I was able to make it to the appointment on time.
Later on when I relayed the story to my mum, she asked “What if she had run away with your top?”
