Indecent Proposal

To the echo of his words, I held the door handle . I realized I might have to jump out of a moving car.

I wanted to see the Burj Al Arab, the world’s first seven- star hotel. As I stood at the bus stop, a luxurious taxi swept up next to me. I had been warned that they were expensive so I declined. Convinced that there was traffic at that time of day, we negotiated and I jumped in. On the way, we had a fairly good conversation. He tried touching me, similar to gestures used back home, so I didn’t make much of it.

We went to the site, I took pictures and he even offered to take me back to the train station. As we talked, I realized he was hinting at something his friend had told him. He finally blurted it in full terms unequivocally that he wanted me to spend the night with him and that he’d take me to the airport the next day but, little did he know that his plan would have been cut unceremoniously by my native wit. I remained calm as I looked out the window trying to pick up on any familiar landmarks.  As I recall, I don’t think my first instinct was to show him my karate moves. I held on to the door lock in case I had to jump out. I have sort of jumped out of a moving car before but that’s a story for another time.

The Burj Al Arab

When he discovered my fingers on the door lock, he sheepishly professed he wasn’t that kind of person. He seemed friendly in the beginning but I wasn’t going to completely let my guard down.

We were back at the bus stop, where this all had started. It was time to pay but I didn’t have the exact fare. I gave him what I had and he sped off with tires spitting gravel against the ground. I left and joyfully leapt up the stairs to catch my train. I was just grateful I was safe.
