The Blue Lagoon

Around thirty miles from the capital city, Reykjavík, the Blue Lagoon is arguable Iceland’s most popular bathing spot where guests can enjoy geothermal heated waters. Its milky florescent blue water, surrounded by volcanic rocks, is rich in silica, the lagoon’s most iconic element. Though the water appears blue, it is the sun’s reflection that gives it a blueish hue. The unique mineral and algae content of the water is said to be good for the skin.

On arrival I received an electronic wristband. This served to make purchases like massages, spa treatments, products, as well as access to changing rooms and one’s locker. I had gone there in summer so while it was cold, it wasn’t freezing. I jumped in my bathing suit and was ready to soak, but I didn’t know where to begin! People were walking on the pedestrian bridge, and bathers were enjoying water temperatures that varied between 37–39 °C, while applying silica deposits to their skin. I dipped and allowed the balmy water to cover me like a cloak .

The steam rising from the water acted as a veil and when the wind passed, it condensed in the air. I went over the mud bar section that had  complimentary white silica mud and slathered it all over. I sported my silica facial then rinsed it off in the Blue Lagoon’s soothing water.

To my surprise, there was an in- water bar within the lagoon that served complimentary drinks. Guests could purchase both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks with the wristband they received on arrival. There was also a small water fall and a section for saunas and steam rooms.

When it was time to leave, I visited their shop which had an array of skin products and purchased a couple of items. On my way home,I realized that my hair was crunchy from the silica which I had not rinsed out.  I guess I went home with a piece of the Blue Lagoon!

It was a relaxing experience bathing in soothing waters and enjoying the region’s beautiful volcanic scenery.
